Reviews for The Cooling Board

From the depths of the author's heart comes a riveting novel that introduces readers to the members who make up the Darling and Devereaux family of Regal City, Louisiana. As much as this clan is different, they are the same; each having forgotten the true worth of family. Some left Regal City in pursuit of a more worldly life whereas others remained in the small city where their family roots were firmly planted; but no matter the distance between them, LuLu Bell Darling Devereaux was the glue that bonded them together, and even following her untimely death, she is determined to mend her broken family. Can her love and compassion for family bring them together-from the grave?

Set in 1969 Louisiana, The Cooling Board is masterfully written by author Tamara Angela Grant. (Promises Made, Promises Kept) With a stroke of genius, Tamara breathed life into the characters who with a little push from 'Bell, blossom into the beautiful bouquet of flowers we call the Darling-Devereaux family.

I highly recommend this book because the author has surely reminded me that no matter where we travel in life, there is nothing more important than where our journey began-family.

-Linda R. Herman, author of Consequences

After reading Tamara Angela Grant's first book, "Promises Made, Promises Kept," I said I'd be looking for her next release and was extremely happy to see that she'd been published again.

In "The Cooling Board" we meet the Darling family in Regal City, Louisiana. Unfortunately, the family has come together to bury Lulu Bell Darling Devereaux, the stitch that held this madness called a family together. All hell breaks loose as the family forgets that in this time of bereavement they should lean on one another for love and support instead of viciously going on the attack. As the family prepares for the last will and testament, Lulu Bell has her final say. Will her crazy relatives utilize her words of wisdom and adjust themselves accordingly? Or has her loss caused an eternal rip for the Darling Devereaux family?

I sincerely enjoyed "The Cooling Board." Set in the late 60's it's easy to vividly transcend into the setting, wording and hot button topics representative of that time. Regal City, Louisiana, is just as much apart of "The Cooling Board" as is the very eccentric family that readers will lovingly embrace, and in many cases relate to. Secrets, lies, jealousy and stubbornness have prevented them for so long to truly operate as a real family. I guarantee that in reading this you're sure to reflect on your own family ties, the mending of fences, tears, laughter, all the while anxiously awaiting the turning of the pages. Now that I'm married, I realize that my husband's family, despite our differences, is my family as well. Initially that was not my understanding and I didn't plan to blend, mix or settle into his family because I felt like they were just that, his family. Besides, I had my own nutty family to deal with. Needless to say, I was wrong. While you can't choose your relatives, you can elect not to overindulge in some of the more outlandish parts. Now that I'm wiser, married, and a mom, I can fully appreciate all of the drama that makes up my uniquely crazy family and respectively have learned to value the time that we have.

Kudos, Tamara, for shining the light on families! Continued success!

Wow, where should I begin? I know many of you didn't agree with the choice I made...I mean, look what I tried to do in the end myself! But I don't think the "normal" straight world understands where I was coming from. What was my impetus for my actions. It's simple. Love. You can march on it, pull out the Bible and thump me with it and call me all kinds of horrible names, but in the end, I am in love. With Loam. With Zeus. Period. And this love I have for these two individuals, this need to sacrifice myself so that they could continue to exist as they always had is why I made the choice I did.Bullsh*t????Look, Zeus and I are in a committed relationship and I'm willing to put our loving relationship next to ANY hetero relationship out there. I know we'd win hands down. Yes, I know what the Bible scriptures say about homosexuality, but the reality is...I'm 100% gay down to my core. I KNOW this.Should I have tried to conform, deny who I truly was to fit in? Come on. Which is the worse sin? Marrying a woman knowing I want to love a man like myself; lying and denying my true feelings over and over and eventually spiraling into the nearly palpable hate and disdain I see emitted between husbands and wives on a regular basis? Or being in a loving relationship, showing and giving my authentic self?I know you don't get me, my relationships, but I'll say my actions were the epitome of unconditional love. I was a sacrificial lamb so others could live. Can you say the same?

Mamie Louella Willis from Somewhere In America

My arthritis is acting up a bit, so give me a moment.

**Knees pop**

All right. I know yâ??all want to know why I said what I said about my neighborhood. For one, I didnâ??t lie on nobody. All you got to do is watch folks and youâ??ll see what the real deal is.

That gal wearing those turtlenecks in eighty degree weather? I seen those women many a time and it only means one thing: Sheâ??s getting her tail whupped on the regular.

The man behind me whose wife left in the middle of the night? Shoot, I believe him when he said she was just a freak. I mean her ex-husband shows up then sheâ??s out the house with a suitcase soon after? She done asked her man to do something that normal at all.

That boy that got into a fight while he was up at the store in a dress? As hard as he is on my old eyes, he ought to just stick to male clothes. But yeah, I called the police when he was out there kissing his fiancé on the street. That mess ainâ??t right.

And when the deacon was up at that golddiggers house, yes, Iâ??m the one called his wife.

So Iâ??m not just some gossipy old woman with no business of her own. I got business. But I also know, if I donâ??t say something, who will? Everybody scared of their shadows these days. Donâ??t nobody want to get involved; want to be loved by everybody while their world is falling down around them.

Not me. Iâ??m saying, telling and reporting whatever, whenever on whoever. I call them like I see them. I know the truth hurts, but it is what it is.

Remember this: It donâ??t matter where you live or how much money you got. People the same all over. Hoity-toity or the ghetto. Same sh*t, different address, somewhere in America.

Yâ??all be good.
